1985年、ボストンのバークリー音楽大学に通っていたジョン・ペトルーシ(G)、ジョン・マイアング(B)、マイク・ポートノイ(Dr)の3人にケヴィン・ムーア(key)が加わって活動開始（Majesty名義、後に改名）、89年にアルバム『When Dream And Day Unite』（Vo:チャーリー・ドミニシ）でデビュー。91年にATCO/ワーナーと契約、2代目Vo.ジェイムズ・ラブリエが加入。92年に2ndアルバム『Images And Words』発表、「Pull Me Under」のヒットにより一躍その名を世界に轟かせる。94年に3rdアルバム『Awake』発表、ケヴィン・ムーア(Key)が脱退しデレク・シェリニアンが加入。97年に4thアルバム『Falling Into Infinity』発表。99年にデレク(Key)が脱退しジョーダン・ルーデスが加入。同年、初のコンセプト作となった5thアルバム『Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From A Memory』発表。
2002年に6thアルバム『Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence』、03年に7thアルバム『Train Of Thought』発表。04年に初の武道館公演を行ない、同年CD/DVD『Live At Budokan』発売。05年の8thアルバム『Octavarium』をもってアトランティック/ワーナーとの契約が終了、ロードランナー（現ワーナー傘下）に移籍。07年に9thアルバム『Systematic Chaos』、09年に10thアルバム『Black Clouds ＆ Silver Linings』発表。翌年日本での初フェス参戦となる＜SUMMER SONIC 10＞に出演。同年9月、創設メンバーの１人でリーダー的存在でもあった最高峰ドラマー（ローリング・ストーン誌＜史上最も偉大なドラマー100＞の2010年版で8位）マイク・ポートノイが脱退。後任に“世界最速ドラマー”の異名を持つマイク・マンジーニ（Extreme, Steve Vai etc.）を迎え、11年に11thアルバム『A Dramatic Turn Of Events』、13年に12thアルバム『Dream Theater』発表。翌年＜LOUD PARK 14＞で来日。16年に壮大な2枚組コンセプト作の13thアルバム『The Astonishing』発表。翌年に名盤2nd『Images And Words』完全再現ツアーで来日。
2019年、インサイドアウト・ミュージック/ ソニーミュージックに移籍し14thアルバム『Distance Over Time』発表。20年にそのツアーのロンドン公演を収めたライヴ作品『Distant Memories - Live in London』発表。21年6月より公式ブートレグ・シリーズ『Lost Not Forgotten Archives』のリリース開始（25年1月現在21タイトル発売）。21年10月に15thアルバム『A View From The Top Of The World』発表、1stシングル「The Alien」が22年の第64回グラミー賞「Best Metal Performance」受賞（バンド初のグラミー受賞）。同年8月に＜DOWNLOAD JAPAN 2022＞（ヘッドライナー）、23年4月に単独ツアーと2年連続で来日。同年10月、マイク・ポートノイ(Dr)の復帰を発表。25年2月に16thアルバム『Parasomnia』発表。

パラソムニアプログレッシヴ・メタルの巨星ドリーム・シアターが、結成40周年という節目の年にマイク・ポートノイ(Dr)の電撃復帰という特大ニュースを引っさげ、通算16作目のオリジナル・アルバムを完成させた。2021年の前作『A View From The Top Of The World』収録の「The Alien」がグラミー賞に輝くなど、揺るぎない地位を一層強固なものにしている彼らだが、やはりバンド創設者の一人で比類なき凄腕、作曲やアレンジ面でもジョン・ペトルーシ(G)と共にバンドの中核を担っていたポートノイの復帰をファンは長年待ち望んでいた。20年のペトルーシのソロ作品『Terminal Velocity』、21年のLiquid Tension Experiment『LTE3』で約10年ぶりに実現した両者の共演が、今回のポートノイ再加入に至るプロセスの大きな第一歩となったであろうことは想像に難くない。タイトルの『Parasomnia』（パラソムニア＝睡眠時随伴症）とは、夢遊病、金縛り、夜驚症といった睡眠障害のことで、ペトルーシが数年前から考えていたテーマだという。ポートノイの創造力豊かな超絶ドラミングを土台にした凄まじいアンサンブルはもちろん、テーマに沿ってシネマティックにまとめ上げたこのアルバムの世界観は、まさにポートノイがかつて在籍していた頃のコンセプチュアルな作品に通ずるものだ。ミキシングとマスタリングは前作に続きアンディ・スニープ（Judas Priest, Arch Enemy, Megadeth etc.）が手掛けている。
