アーカンソー州リトルロック出身。03年2月、映画「デアデビル」で、シングル「ブリング・ミー・トゥ・ライフ」がフィーチャーされ、チャートで１位を獲得。同年3月に発売されたデビュー・アルバム『フォールン』は発売わずか6週間でプラチナ・ディスクを獲得した。7月にはワールドワイド・デビュー、イギリスの「シングル１位／アルバム３位」という大ブレイクを筆頭に、ここ日本でも、オリコン洋楽チャート初登場１位にランクイン、日本ゴールド・ディスク大賞にも輝いた。
